How the notice deadline works
The rule is simple: notice deadline = renewal date minus notice period. If you miss that date, many contracts carry on for another term on the same terms.
For example, a phone system contract renews on 31 March 2027 with three months' notice. Counting back three calendar months gives 31 December 2026, a Thursday. That is the last day to tell the supplier you want to change or end the contract. Starting the review 30 days earlier, by 1 December, leaves time to compare options.
Why business days are tricky in New Zealand
Some contracts give notice in business days or working days. Counting them by hand means skipping weekends and every public holiday, including days that move to the Monday when they fall on a weekend. Each region also has its own anniversary day, so a deadline in Wellington can differ from one in Canterbury.
The Christmas and New Year period is where most mistakes happen. Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day and 2 January can take four business days out of two weeks, so a 20-business-day notice period before a late-January renewal starts well before Christmas.
What auto-renew means
An auto-renewing contract continues for a new term unless someone gives notice in time. Nothing has to be signed for the renewal to happen, which is why the notice deadline, not the renewal date, is the date that matters.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a business day in NZ?
Usually any weekday that isn't a public holiday. This calculator skips Saturdays, Sundays, national public holidays (including Mondayised days and Matariki) and, if you choose a region, that region's anniversary day. Some contracts define business days differently, so check yours.
What if my contract has a fixed notice date?
Some contracts say notice must be given by a set date each year, such as 31 October. Choose "A fixed date each year" and the calculator finds the latest occurrence of that date on or before the renewal date.
Does this tell me if my notice is valid?
No. It only works out the dates. Your contract decides how notice must be given, for example in writing, to a particular address or by a particular person.
