How to create an operations register

An operations register is a structured view of everything a business relies on to function. Here's how to build one from scratch.

An operations register is the single view of everything your business relies on to function — the suppliers, contracts, assets, documents and responsibilities that keep the lights on.

Step 1 — Inventory

List everything the business currently depends on. Don't worry about structure yet — a rough list is better than a perfect one you never finish.

Step 2 — Categorise

Group entries into a small number of operational categories: Suppliers, Contracts, Renewals, Assets, Documents, Responsibilities.

Step 3 — Assign owners

Every entry needs one named owner. If everyone owns it, nobody does.

Step 4 — Add key dates

Renewals, review dates, insurance expiries. If it has a date, it belongs in the register.

Step 5 — Link the underlying documents

Contracts, quotes, correspondence — attach them to the register entry so context lives together.

Step 6 — Schedule reviews

A register that never gets reviewed becomes wrong within a quarter.

From spreadsheet to system

Most businesses start in a spreadsheet. That's fine for a few dozen entries. Once multiple people need to maintain it — or you start missing renewals — it's time for a proper system like AvenorOps.
